Monumental Horses for the Arlington Memorial Bridge, Washington |
|
Bronze by Leo J. Friedlander, cast in 1950 by the “Marinelli” Artistic Foundry in Florence. The sculpture was a project which the sculptor had made in the 1930s. However the project came into being only after World War 2 as a gift from the People of Italy to the People of America as a token of their gratitude for having been liberated from Nazi-fascism. The symbolic delivery of Italy’s gift to the United States took place on May 3rd 1951, at the opening of the National Handicraft Fair in Florence. Soon after the bronzes were crated, transferred to the port of Leghorn and put on an America-bound ship. The “Sacrifice” statue is now at the entrance of the “Arlington Memorial Bridge”.
